To All,

Last month our VHF SATERN net ran into some issues.  I don't know for sure, but it seems 2-3 of the northern WeComm repeaters were unlinked or otherwise not working for us.  I did not hear any check-ins off the Suring, Sayner or Irma repeater that night.  To compound things, Roger (our net control) uses Sayner as primary and Suring as a back up.  So I stepped in to function as net control.

On the topic of linked repeaters, you may or may not know that there is a State-wide 70cm linked repeater system.  It operates under the call sign WI9WIN.  SATERN used one of the WI9WIN repeaters last summer at the Patriot North Exercise 2018 as a back up.  One of the SATERN Communicators had to use this system for a couple of days until he could get his 2m issues resolved.  While we were able to maintain communications, it became more cumbersome for net control and the Operations Chief to monitor canteen activity with one of the canteens operating on a differenct frequency.  Still, difficult communications is better than no communications.

Last week I did a SATERN presentation at the Ozaukee County radio club  in Grafton.  There were over 40 people there and they did a good job promoting my presentation beforehand.  I also brought my go-kit.  Seems people are always interested in being able to see what other people are doing.  Many did not know that SATERN existed or what they did.  The presentation went well and they asked if I could visit again next year and provide an update.

On January 5th I will have a display table at the West Allis Radio Amateur Club (WARAC) annual swapfest in Waukesha.  If anyone is interested in helping me out, contact me and I will give you the details.  You can also find out more about the swapfest on their website.  I had a table last year and the event was well attended.  If you recall, I included a couple of photos last month.

Congratulations to Dick Carravetta (W9AUA) of Racine who completed his qualifications and received his ID badge.

I'm sure everyone is all set for Christmas by now.  Well, maybe not.

As a reminder our monthly VHF SATERN net is this Thursday (December 20th) at 1830 (6:30 p.m.) on the WeComm system.  Roger is net control.  Also, the Central Territory 40m SATERN Net is held on Tuesdays on 7.265 MHz at 0830 (8:30 a.m.).

Until next month...

To All,

We had a Central Territory conference call last Wednesday regarding SATERN.  Aside from those at Territorial Headquarters (THQ), the EDS Directors and SATERN Coordinators were also invited to participate.  Many topics were discussed and it gave us a chance to interact with our new Central Territory SATERN Coordinator, Bob Langsfeld (WB9TZC).  It is intended to have these teleconference meetings periodically to keep in touch with each other on a larger scale.

One of the items of importance coming out of the meeting was to determine what equipment and capabilities each SATERN member has.  I put out the request to gather than information from you last week.  I am still waiting for a number of responses.  Please respond to me if you have not already done so.

Another issue coming from the call was the importance of cross-training.  This is especially important if you have the desire to deploy in the field for the Salvation Army.  If you are only qualified for SATERN it is very unlikely you will be called up for this purpose.  However, if you are also trained in other areas you increase your chances of being deployed significantly.  There are many areas in which to choose, but Canteen Operations is the most likely option.  Two of our members (Kyle Ruesch - AB9AX and Ron Keller - KC9YVL) completed this course in Green Bay last month.

For those of you that were listening to the Badger Weather Net on the WeComm repeater system last Saturday got a chance to witness the benefit of using ham radio to help people in need.  While the net was taking place and individual called called net control in need of assistance.  His signal was sporadic, but after a number of tries net control was able to discern that he was stranded with a vehicle and trailer in the ditch in Price County.  Net control was able to contact the authorities and send help to the individual.  What a great success story.

For those of you that subscribe to CQ magazine may have noticed an article about emergency communications in the October issue.  The photograph on page 52 showed an ARES radio communicator, but in the background you could see a Salvation Army canteen.

There is a travelogue show called "Discover Wisconsin."  Last winter they did a piece up in St. Germain which included the Arctic Warrior race.  A number of SATERN members assisted with radio communications for this event.  Perhaps they even have some screen time.  The episode "Winter Wonderland" is being broadcast this week.  You will have to consult your local station for air time.  It is on the Green Bay station on 10/17/2018 at 1830 (6:30 p.m.).

I will be doing a SATERN presentation for the Ozaukee radio club on December 12th.  I am also arranging for SATERN to have a display table at the West Allis Radio Amateur Club winter swapfest in Waukesha on 1/5/2019.  This is a well-attended event and if you would like to assist me with the display table let me know and I will fill you in on the details.  I have attached a couple of photographs from last year.

As a reminder our monthly VHF SATERN net is this Thursday (November 15th) at 1830 (6:30 p.m.) on the WeComm system.  Roger is net control.  Also, the Central Territory 40m SATERN Net is held on Tuesdays on 7.265 MHz at 0830 (8:30 a.m.).  I have checked in to this net a few times.  Give it a try.

To All,

This is a reminder for those who do not yet have their ID badge to please finish up your required training.  You will not be considered for a Salvation Army deployment if you do not have this in hand.  Drop me a line if you have any questions or are having difficulty completing the process.
